Way, way up north in the cool, in the wilderness, in the spring; we went . . .

Every few years, Carl and I have been lucky enough to be asked to travel to Alpena to entertain the local law enforcement community, for their annual ball.  This year was the 45th annual affair that culminated at the Alpena Events Complex.

The faithful arrived at around 5:30 Pm to partake of an wonderful dinner.  Everyone dressed so nicely, with plenty of smiles and handshakes designed to renew old acquaintances or strengthen new friendships.

After the wonderful meal, it was time to mingle and listen to some quiet, soothing music while the cares and problems of the year were discussed and hopefully relenquished.

Slow dancing was all the rage, as most couples enjoyed their favorite request or two, accentuated by the warm glow of soft candles and vivid stage lighting.

From classic Motown and old blues, to the up-tempo sounds of todays’ country music; there were songs for just about everyone at this years’ soi`ree`.

If that wasn’t enough excitement for everyone, a surprise announcement was made that there was to be even more entertainment to look forward to!

The lights came up and the MC asked the attendees to please give a warm round of applause to the special guest star of the night . . . Mr. Billy Ray Bauer!

On cue, the croBilly_Ray_Bauerwd erupted as Mr. Bauer launched right into his comedy routine, which included some sharp-witted and timely observations of people and lifes’ many laments.

He talked, he sang and mused his way into everyones’ hearts as the enjoyable night rolled smoothly along.  He even shared his many impressions and witticisms to the delight of Alpena’s finest.

Nothing could put a damper on this amazing evening, and it certainly wouldn’t be Bob and Carl!  No sooner did Billy Ray leave the stage than Carl and I took it right back; upping the tempo as the real dancers began to cut a rug.

In the end, it was a very pleasant night, in Alpena.  There were several rumblings of up-coming events that we would be perfect for, should we merely take the four and a half hour trek back to these friendly confines.

Hmmmmmmmmm . . .       You know, we just might take them up on that!

Awakening early on Saturday morning, we began the long trip home.  All in all it was a very pleasant weekend in Alpena.  Great people, appreciative fans, and some wonderful scenery.

Life is a bit slower up north, even on a Friday night in the springtime.  Sometimes, slower is just the right tempo . . .
